Equipped with comprehensive animal care facilities and a professional team of caretakers and veterinarians, Ocean Park Hong Kong has joined hands with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and conservation partners over the years to receive and care for over a thousand rescued or confiscated wild animals.

With our dedicated rehabilitation, animals that meet the health standards will be safely released back to their native habitats. For those with permanent injuries or those too frail to survive independently, we continue to provide them with lifelong care as they become animal ambassadors at exhibits and programmes for education.

Our efforts extend beyond rescue. We work alongside the public to clean up coastlines and hiking trails, helping to restore the natural environment. We also conduct ecological surveys to provide information that supports conservation, building a safer future for wildlife.

Horseshoe Crabs

Horseshoe crabs are native to Hong Kong, with the tri-spine horseshoe crab being an endangered species. They inhabit Hong Kong's waters and breed on mudflats, facing multiple threats including habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing.

We have established the Asian Horseshoe Crab conservation and Breeding Centre at the back-of-house area to provide proper care for horseshoe crabs rescued from the wild.

Started in 2009, the Juvenile Horseshoe Crab School Rearing Programme teaches students to care for and monitor juvenile horseshoe crabs to eventually release them into the wild. To date, over 2,000 juveniles have been successfully released.

We have been conducting horseshoe crab population surveys in Hong Kong since 2014. We recently partnered with The Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong in 2025 to apply drones and AI technologies to enhance efficiency.

We also regularly organise clean-ups on the mudflats, removing plastic waste and abandoned fishing nets to protect horseshoe crabs from being entangled or ingesting microplastics.
