Environment and Carbon Management Policy

Ocean Park recognizes its corporate responsibilities towards both the environment and the community by addressing climate change. Supporting Hong Kong Government's Climate Action Plan's carbon neutrality target, the Park is committed to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 with good environmental practice among its staff and business partners, and will seek to encourage its suppliers and contractors to apply the same level of commitment and concern to environmental matters.

The Park endeavors to conserve natural resources and reduce our carbon footprint, contributing to a sustainable future through effective operations and environmental protection initiatives. Committed to compliance with all regulations and statutes, Ocean Park upholds a proud history of rigorous management, monitoring and reporting of our carbon emissions.

Promoting sustainability, the Park will continue to positively interact with stakeholders in local communities, industry, commercial and the public sector, as well as the international communities. Driving life-long learning and conservation advocacy, Ocean Park's staff will be enabled through training and capacity building to minimize the direct and indirect environmental impacts.

The Environment and Carbon Management Steering Committee will guide the Park's sustainability approach, developing and enhancing its carbon reduction programmes. This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure its conformity with the Park's strategies and operations.

Striving towards carbon neutrality by resolving the problem at source

Ocean Park always embraces the ethos of responsible global citizenship and environmental sustainability, and addresses climate change in the Park’s day-to-day operations.

With the success gained in achieving the ten-year carbon targets of reducing 10% of absolute carbon emissions, that was set in 2012, four years ahead of schedule in the 2017/18 fiscal year, the Park proudly embraces its pivotal role in championing initiatives and align with the government's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Solar Power Systems

To promote the development of renewable energy in the community, Ocean Park took the lead in participating in HK Electric’s Feed-in Tariff Scheme by installing solar panel systems at Polar Adventure in 2018. Completed with Phase 2 of parkwide solar energy projects, a total of 11 rooftops were installed with solar panel systems, The installed capacity was around 200 kilowatt-peak (kWp), generating about 1,100,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 245 four-person households.

The Park fulfils its energy-saving mission through five practices, which include adopting advanced absorption chillers; adopting a four-season setting in different animal exhibits; upgrading light fittings; replacing old facilities with more efficient and energy-saving ones; and raising staff awareness of energy conservation through training and promotions. The Park’s excellent carbon reduction results demonstrate Ocean Park’s responsibility in protecting the environment, and its efforts and commitment to promoting environmental sustainability.

Last but not least, the Park champions core values – conservation and education, and partners with various institutions to promote environmental protection and biodiversity through student and public engagement initiatives, awareness-building campaigns, curriculum content, research projects, eco-tours, study tours, etc.

Recycling Efforts

Ocean Park continues to advance waste reduction and source separation for recycling, while simultaneously cultivating a strong sense of responsibility for sustainable development among our staff. In 2024, we organised the Ocean Park Recycling Competition to further enhance staff awareness of environmental protection, recycling and waste reduction. Over 8,500kg of recyclables were collected during the event.

The Park also supported the Environmental Protection Department's GREEN@COMMUNITY programme, and installed smart recycling bins at Ocean Square, encouraging visitors to take part in recycling and energising community participation in recycling initiatives.

Embracing new technology for food waste management

Ocean Park has a decade-long practice of collecting food waste. Not only from our kitchen, but also from food waste bins at staff canteens and restaurants to encourage food waste recycling among guests and non-kitchen staff. In 2024, the Park introduced a new-generation food waste recycling mechanism and installed a Food TranSmarter to automatically liquefy food waste at the Park into slurry. The technology offers an innovative, clean and highly hygienic solution for processing and transporting up to 500kg of food waste a day, transforming it into a valuable resource for renewable energy generation. Once it undergoes anaerobic processing, what was considered waste yields biogas, electricity and nutrient-rich fertilizer. The Food TranSmarter's airtight design not only eliminates odours but also upholds stringent hygiene standards, even during extended storage. The system has enabled us to reduce food waste collection frequency from daily to weekly, thereby curtailing carbon emissions from transportation. Its scope has since expanded to encompass animal feed preparation and sorted leftovers. The use of TranSmarter reflects the Park’s commitment in sustainability, operational efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
