Two panda cubs, two candles, double the joy! Ocean Park celebrated giant panda cubs Jia Jia and De De’s two-year old birthday today with an array of exciting events.
The birthday twins were treated to a bespoke ice birthday cake alongside themed enrichment items lovingly crafted by the caretakers at Giant Panda Adventure. Dancers from Hong Kong Dance Company joined Ocean Park’s performance team for a special panda-themed show at the Lagoon Platform near the main entrance as the Park opened for visitors. Meanwhile, the Whiskers Villagers also hosted a Bamboo Birthday Upcycle Workshop to engage young panda fans to celebrate this special occasion.
The exclusive show specially curated for the birthday features young talents from the HKDance Children & Youth Troupes alongside Ocean Park’s performance team, setting an uplifting tone for the day. The musical brings a lively ensemble of characters to life. Dressed as giant panda cubs, the dancers conveyed an important message of animal conservation.
At the Bamboo Birthday Upcycle Workshop hosted by the Whiskers Villagers, participants use bamboo leaves to create unique birthday cards and celebrate the giant panda’s birthday together.
Double the joy, double the growth
Under the attentive care of their mum Ying Ying and caretakers, both Jia Jia and De De now weigh more than 60kg! They have made impressive progress on essential husbandry training. Both cubs now recognise their names, promptly responding and approaching caretakers when called, and they could voluntarily enter and sit properly inside the training crate. The twins have also become skilled at the fundamentals of ‘target training’. This crucial skill lays the foundation for relax, voluntary and cooperative medical checkups in the future.
As Jia Jia and De De continue to grow, their caretakers are beginning to gradually wean them off supplementary formula milk. However, the cubs are still free to nurse naturally from Ying Ying whenever they like, leaving the decision of when to fully conclude nursing entirely up to them.
As the eagerness of the cubs to spend more time exploring their habitat continues to grow, Giant Panda Adventure will extend its daily opening hours starting today (15 August), closing at 5:30pm daily instead of 4:30pm. This offers visitors more time to share joyful moments with the panda family.
Promoting sustainability on National Ecology Day
As today also marks the National Ecology Day, Ocean Park highlighted its commitment to environmental stewardship through green takeaways for visitors. In collaboration with the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), a special-edition biochar has been created and distributed to park visitors for free. Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich product produced by heating wood chips in a limited-oxygen environment renowned for enhancing soil health, improving water retention and sequestering carbon. Craftily produced using a blend of recycled woodchips and giant panda faeces, this eco-friendly gift serves as a memorable reminder of sustainable living habits.
To add to the celebrations, visitors were also gifted complimentary limited-edition giant panda magnets. The collectible magnets come in a set of four and features Le Le, Ying Ying, and their twin cubs Jia Jia and De De. Members of the public are invited to visit Ocean Park again tomorrow (16 August) to celebrate the birthday of the cubs’ mum Ying Ying and collect the last magnet on the set!
